On the eastern side of the Baja peninsula, La Ventana is world renown kite surfing destination. La Ventana’s wind, ‘El Norte’ on gusty days, peaks in the winter months, attracting kite surfers to the pristine conditions. Designed for a kite surfing couple, their lifestyle, in addition to the climate, was an essential part of the creative process. Situated on a cliff side bluff overlooking the ocean, the sites breathtaking views include Isla Cerralvo, an uninhabited island popular for snorkeling and diving.
To protect from the wind, provide shade, and enhance the view, the formal structure became two boxes-one elevated on top of the other. The north side of the structure is protected from major winds by a concrete wall. Openings in the boxes face eastward, toward the water and the sunrise. One box is elevated to enhance the view from the second floor and allow for shaded outdoor living space below. The intense sun from the west is mitigated by a double concrete wall and a screen allowing for diffuse natural light and passive temperature regulation.
The middle of the structure is sheltered from the wind including an outdoor area on the ground floor. This area is an ideal spot for post kite surf relaxation and quality time with friends or family. The open function of the space invites anything from barbecues to hot tubs to dinner and drinks with community, an integral and vibrant part of life in LaVentana and El Sargento.
The circulation of the space is designed around a Cardon Cactus, a native species in the region. Maintaining the integrity of the particularly tall cactus was important after spending time on the site. The stairs circulate around it and lead upstairs to the main bedroom. Set apart from the communal area below, the bedroom is a quiet retreat for the couple. Looking out the windows of the master bed, or stepping out onto the upper patio, one can watch the sunrise and check the surf for the day.
